Being a Blogger Boss – Get your Geek On

Blogger Boss

So, you may (or sadly, may not) have noticed that the Only Girl website has had a little spruce up – thoughts on a postcard would be appreciated. I can assure  you, this has been no small feat- in –fact it has used more brain power than completing the tax credits form combined with working out our under-floor heating, but I’m getting there and WILL NOT give up!

I’ve been blogging for nearly 3 years, but never on my own site; I was lucky that I would rock up to work, do my little blogging thing and the site would all be taken care of by those far better equipped in tech talk. Starting my own blog in November last year was a tad daunting to say the least, I’d been planning the moment for years and it was finally here- but this euphoria was short lived, as I soon realised I’d outgrown my WordPress.com site. I wanted more – I wanted and needed more control and flexibility- but this meant truly coming out of my comfort zone, heading into the unknown wilds of WordPress.org! .Org in all its self-hosted, plugin and css glory.

The only girl in the house at her desk working tech stuff

Panic not friend, if I’m using words that sound like you’ve overheard a Mark Zuckerberg/Bill Gates confab, there’s help at hand.  I wouldn’t have had the balls or know-how to get started had it not been for one thing – Blogger Boss; A place where us creative blogger types can find refuge in the caring arms of Madeleine and co, who will guide you through all the tech jargon you’ve spent years avoiding. Blogger Boss is a 9 week course focused solely on teaching the scary tech stuff, so you can be in complete control of your blog.

Thus far me and my little group of blog-babes are only on the pre-course module, but have had my hand held through setting up my .org site, selecting and installing Fab blog templates over on Etsy, installing and using plugins (with tried and tested recommendations) – all with the added bonus of a FB community to remind you that you’re not the only one wondering where to stick your Google Analytics code (trust me, I was tempted to shove it right back from whence it came on a couple of occasions!!).

Come over and join in the fun, we’re officially starting our techy-makeovers on 1st of June so make sure you sign up before then.

But for now – please please let me know your thoughts on the new site, good, bad and ugly – I can handle the feedback!

Oh I wish I’d seen this course before now. It would have been perfect. I took the leap into the unknown and went self-hosted a month ago. I’m still finding it so stressful. I am so not technical and have had to get to grips with it alone. Boooooo! 🙁
You’re blog is looking great! I found you via instagram tonight and I love your blog and your writing style. 🙂 I hope the rest of the self-hosted move and tweaks go well x

Hey Chloe, thanks for your comment and lovely words about the blog! Getting there – still!! But I think it’s one of those things that i could tweak forever!! the best part of Blogger Boss is that we have a Facebook community where we can ask ANY questions, day or night and always get a really helpful answer. that’s there for life – which is just as well as I could still be tweaking in 10 years!! Good luck with you site, which is looking great!!

I’ve only just come across your blog, so don’t know what it looked like before, but it’s bloody lovely! I’ll be sure to check out the course. It sounds amazing. While I’m on maternity leave I plan to go self-hosted and I need all the help I can get!

      Hey Emma

Thanks so much! Blogger boss is great and I used my maternity leave to get my blog into shape too! Mind you, I could still do with another 10 years to fiddle with it as much as i’d like! Once you have the knowledge, it’s irritating all the changes you’ll want to make!
